First- What is an Electronic Medical Record?
Imagine that a hospital is like a big bookshelf storing important information about all the patients. Things like your name, age, any illnesses you have, and medications.
An Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is like a special computerized notebook that helps the hospital keep track of all this information. It's like a digital version of the hospital's big bookshelf. Instead of using regular paper and pen, they use a computer to write down and store everything.
So, whenever you visit the hospital, the doctors and nurses use the EMR to write down notes about what's happening to you. They can also see what happened during your previous visits and all the treatments you received.
There are 3 major hospital EMRs in America right now: Meditech, Cerner, and Epic. They do not communicate with each other.
Epic is the largest EMR vendor in the country and has created a monopoly. People who know and work with epic only criticize them in dark corners and hushed words.
Those in the medical industry dare not say more because it would be career-limiting.
Journalists don’t know enough about healthcare to ask critical questions and write the needed articles exposing Epic and Faulkner for how they’re hurting the country.
So I’m writing this series, anonymously, because someone has to hold this woman accountable.
Excellent.
FYI, New York City made a change to their hospital records system in March 2020. I'm not sure what they switched to or from, but any info you have on that would be appreciated.
I can't wait to see what you have to say about this!
