Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 14th.
You’re already ahead of the game planning a month in advance- that in itself is a gift.
What most mothers want are the more cumbersome aspects of motherhood alleviated for the day so they can focus on the enjoyable parts of motherhood. The good news is, the best gifts for moms on Mother’s Day really don’t cost any money.
I am not suggesting you have to do all of the below- that would be incredibly overwhelming in one weekend- these are just a variety of suggestions. If you think I’m off base, forward this post to one of your sisters or a co-worker you trust and ask her if I’m right.
A Clean House
You don’t have to clean it, you can hire someone to clean it. If you can’t afford to hire a professional cleaning service- yes you should clean it. Having a clean home not only is relaxing, but it permits her to focus on the more enjoyable aspects of motherhood. If you don’t have a regular cleaning service coming, a monthly cleaning service is an excellent gift, even if she says she doesn’t want one.
All The Laundry Done
It’s a rare moment to find every piece of laundry in the house clean, folded, and put away. You do not get laundry credit for merely filling the washing machine and emptying the drier. Wake up early with the kids and do the laundry.
Car Detailed
Mom cars are notoriously a disaster. Cheerios, sticky windows, spilled food, sports equipment, weird smells….clean and detail the car. Get the kids involved, it will teach them a skill and they may be a bit more respectful of the vehicle they cleaned.
Food
This one is dicey. Mother’s Day typically consists of kids making breakfast and mom cleaning up the mess. Plan all the meals for the day. Again, not the most fun part of motherhood that you can alleviate so she can focus on enjoying her kids.
Breakfast:
You could take her out to brunch, however, the most affordable and easiest option is a breakfast casserole. They’re nearly impossible to screw up. There are both sweet and savory breakfast casseroles, you put them together the night before, stick them in the fridge, wake- up turn on the oven, and in 45 minutes delicious breakfast.
If cleaning the kitchen is a problem for your family, use plastic plates and cups.
Lunch and Dinner:
DO NOT ASK HER WHAT SHE WANTS TO EAT ON MOTHER’S DAY
You know her, and if you don’t start paying attention. Where does she like to eat? What are her favorite meals? Do not ask her if she wants tacos on Mother’s day- just make tacos. Do not ask her if she wants to go to that Cuban Cafe you enjoyed eating at last October- just make reservations at the Cuban Cafe.
Gifts
Gifts from children should be handmade, as long as effort was put into them. Do not rely on your school or church to help them make these gifts, they most likely will but you need to help them too, which is why it’s good you’re planning in advance.
Your Google is as good as mine- but here’s a link to make it easier
Mother's Day Crafts Kids Can Make
Gifts from you need to be something thoughtful. Does she always talk about planting pumpkins? Plant pumpkins. Does she want to get her nails done but can’t imagine wasting that kind of money on a service? Get her a gift card. Think of things she wants but can’t justify spending that kind of money on herself. I talked about a shelf in the laundry room for a year- my husband built me that shelf.
Maybe you were hoping for something more specific- something that would permit you to click twice- enter a credit card number and then be good to go. Sorry, you should just pay attention to your wife for the next few weeks and see what she drops hints about. However, here is the one thing MOST women want:
Keep it simple
If you go into Mother’s Day focused on alleviating the least favorable aspects of motherhood so your wife can focus on the more favorable aspects, you’ll come out a winner.
(Moms, did I leave anything out?)
Married 17 years but this article is still exactly what I needed!! Thanks!
Good stuff although I saw this when you first posted but procrastinated until just now to read it. Still have time...
